When we set out to launch Tom&Sawyer's human grade gently-cooked pet meals across Canada in 2015, we wanted to be disruptive. At that time none of us could see how our family pet's food was made, or what kinds of ingredients and food safety was involved. So we opened Canada's first open pet meals kitchen, where customers could come in and talk to our team of chefs, and see first hand that we were using fresh chicken breast and non-GMO vegetables! We added a pet-friendly barista lounge and became quite the community hub, hosting so many pet health and lifestyle events!

In 2023, AAFCO proposed new strict guidelines for being able to call pet food "human grade", including needing to make the food in a federally inspected human food facility. While these guidelines don't apply to the unregulated Canadian market, Tom&Sawyer always strives to be the best, so we moved to an existing human food facility and kept our original kitchen as an R&D kitchen.

In the summer of 2025, we left our original Toronto location after 10 years, moving to office space for our team downtown, and our various partner production and fulfillment centres across Toronto.
