Where Can You Get Truly Fresh Dog Food in Toronto?

Written by Kristin Matthews, Tom&Sawyer CoFounder

Dog food Toronto pet owners can trust! Because it starts with our high standards. We prepare meals in a government-inspected Human Grade facility, gently cooking restaurant-quality ingredients in small batches. We deliver frozen meals directly to your door throughout the Greater Toronto Area, or you can find us at hundreds of retailers across the city. Our facility produces fresh, complete meals without the processing that destroys nutrients in traditional kibble.

Where can Toronto dog owners find truly fresh, gently-cooked meals made with Human Grade ingredients? Right here at Tom&Sawyer, where we've been creating whole food meals for pups since our Yorkie-Poo Sawyer refused to eat kibble over 10 years ago.

That's right, I am a pet parent who wanted the best for my pup. We started our journey because Sawyer wouldn't touch traditional dog food. When we investigated the pet food industry, we discovered how unregulated it is and how low the ingredient standards really are. We decided our dog deserved better. And that yours did too. And so we started this company in 2015 and became one of the very first pioneers in gently-cooked pet food. Tom&Sawyer is the oldest gently-cooked dog food company in Toronto! You'll discover how we cook fresh meals in our Toronto kitchen, why our delivery service brings freshness to your door, where to find us at retailers, and how we make fresh food convenient for city living.

Fun fact: Just Food For Dogs (2010), The Farmer's Dog (2014), Nom Nom (2015) and Tom&Sawyer (2015) are 4 longest running human grade gently-cooked pet food companies in North America!

Fresh Meals Cooked Right Here in Toronto

We are setting a new standard for Toronto residents. In 2023, we became the first pet food brand in Canada to meet the standards of AAFCO for Human Grade: this means not only human grade ingredients, but also being made in a government-inspected human food production facility. This makes us not pet feed, but fully human grade food for cats and dogs! And we make our food the way you make your food at home! We cook each ingredient separately in small batches to preserve maximum nutrition, ensuring local, fresh meals reach your dog faster than products shipped from afar.

Our Human Grade Facility and Standards

We prepare meals in a government-inspected Human Food production facility just north of Toronto, making us the first fresh pet food brand in Canada to meet these standards. Our trained chefs prepare every batch by hand in small quantities.

Our production maintains high standards:

• Government-inspected Human Grade facility
• Trained human food production culinary members, people not machines!
• Small-batch production
• Each ingredient is cooked separately
• Located within the Greater Toronto Area

When we started in 2015, we operated Canada's first open pet meals kitchen that was housed within our retail storefront, where customers could watch our preparation process behind glass walls. However, when AAFCO changed their defintion to require human grade food for dogs and cats to be made in a government-inspected human food production facility, we partnered with a highly qualified human food facility and embedded our culinary-trained chef into their kitchen to ensure we upheld the same transparency and quality standards that is our Tom&Sawyer Promise to you and your pets.

Producing locally in Toronto means fresher ingredients and faster delivery to your pup.

Restaurant-Quality Ingredients We Source

We use ingredients you'd find in your kitchen — chicken breast, fresh vegetables, and other whole food components. Our recipes are actually at least 97% whole food ingredients and we add human grade supplements to ensure that the food is complete & balanced throughout the cooking and freezing stages (where many vitamins & minerals found naturally in whole foods are unable to withstand these temperatures, which are necessary for food safety).

Every ingredient meets strict standards:

• Restaurant-quality proteins
• 100% non-GMO
• Lead ingredient is always muscle meats, often wild and always ethically sourced
• Source locally when possible
• Human-edible throughout the entire process.

Our Italian Beef Pasta uses lean ground beef, beef liver, semolina pasta, boiled eggs and spinach.
Classic Pork Stew contains lean ground pork, root vegetables, and nutrient-dense leafy greens.

Why We Ship Frozen for Maximum Freshness

We freeze meals immediately after Gently-cooking to lock in freshness without preservatives. Frozen delivery maintains nutritional quality from our Toronto facility to your refrigerator.

Freezing preserves quality naturally:

• Flash-frozen immediately after cooking
• No preservatives needed
• Maintains nutrient integrity
• Easy to store in the freezer
• Simple to thaw and serve

Shelf-stable pet food requires extreme heat processing that destroys a high amount of food-derived nutrients and preservatives. Fresh refrigerated food has a limited shelf life. Frozen delivery gives you maximum nutrition preserved naturally with convenient storage.

Thaw meals in your refrigerator overnight or quickly in warm water. Store thawed portions in the fridge for about 4 days. Keep the rest frozen until needed.
