Just as Dr. Inglis says, each type of dog coat has its own unique characteristics and care requirements. Ensuring your canine companion has healthy skin and coat is essential for their overall well-being. One way to support their skin and coat health is through their diet. In this article, we'll take a closer look at different types of dog coats and discuss how gently cooked food can contribute to maintaining a lustrous and healthy coat.

Smooth and Short Coats

Dogs with smooth and short coats, like Beagles and Dalmatians, possess a coat that lies close to their body. This type of coat requires minimal grooming, making it a popular choice among busy pet owners. However, despite their low maintenance, these coats still benefit from proper nutrition. Gently cooked dog food provides essential nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants that support overall skin health and contribute to a glossy coat.

Curly and Wavy Coats

Breeds like Poodles and Bichon Frisés boast curly or wavy coats that are both charming and distinctive. These coats often require regular grooming to prevent matting and tangling. Gently cooked diets can be enriched with ingredients like coconut oil which provides healthy fats to nourish the skin and maintain coat texture. Additionally, ingredients rich in biotin and zinc can contribute to the strength and health of the hair shaft.

Double Coats

Dogs with double coats, such as German Shepherds and Huskies, have a dense undercoat beneath longer guard hairs. These coats play a crucial role in regulating body temperature and providing insulation. For breeds with double coats, a balanced diet is essential to maintain both layers of fur. Gently cooked food can be tailored to provide optimal protein levels, ensuring the development of healthy guard hairs and a well-maintained undercoat.

Wire Coats

Wire-coated breeds like Terriers and Dachshunds have a coarse, bristly outer coat that protects them from rough terrain and weather. These coats benefit from gentle exfoliation and occasional hand-stripping to maintain their unique texture. Including ingredients like sweet potatoes and flaxseed in a gently cooked diet can provide the necessary vitamins and minerals to support skin health and the development of a robust wire coat.

Flat Coats

Flat coats, found in breeds like Labrador Retrievers and Golden Retrievers, have dense, water-resistant topcoats that lie flat against the body. These coats often require regular brushing to prevent matting and shedding. Gently cooked diets can incorporate ingredients like omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil, which not only promote healthy skin but also contribute to a soft and lustrous coat.

How Gently Cooked Food Can Enhance Coat Health

Regardless of the coat type your canine companion possesses, the quality of their diet plays a significant role in maintaining a healthy skin and coat. A dull or flaky coat can be indicative of underlying health issues, while a shiny and vibrant coat often signifies good nutrition and care. Gently cooked food offers several benefits that can positively impact coat health:

Balanced Nutrition: Gently cooked meals can be tailored to provide optimal levels of protein, healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals that are essential for coat development and maintenance.

Preservation of Nutrients: The gentle cooking process used in preparing this type of food helps retain more nutrients compared to traditional extrusion methods. Essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals remain intact, supporting healthy skin and coat.

High-Quality Ingredients: Premium ingredients in gently cooked food, such as lean meats, fish, and vegetables, supply the necessary nutrients to support skin and coat health.

Quality Protein: High-quality protein sources in gently cooked food provide amino acids necessary for keratin production, the protein that makes up the skin, hair, and nails. This promotes a strong and healthy coat!

Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Ingredients like fish oil, provide omega-3 fatty acids that reduce inflammation, support skin barrier function, and contribute to a shiny coat.

Antioxidants: Gently cooked diets can include antioxidant-rich ingredients like blueberries and sweet potatoes, which combat free radicals and promote overall skin health. All of our meals contain various ingredients with high antioxidant content!

Digestibility: Gently cooked food is gently processed to retain nutrient integrity, ensuring that your dog absorbs the essential nutrients necessary for a healthy coat. Recent research also suggests that gently cooked meals are more digestible than extruded dry foods!

Limited Ingredients: Our gently cooked recipes contain minimal ingredients which makes them more suitable for dogs with allergies or sensitivities that may contribute to skin issues. Consider our Kangaroo recipe, a super limited ingredient meal, for your pup with allergies!
