Can Dogs Eat Yogurt? A Simple Guide to Feeding Yogurt Safely
By Kelly Gredner, RVT, VTS (Nutrition) ·
Can dogs eat yogurt? For some healthy dogs, yes. Plain, unsweetened yogurt can be offered as a small treat or topper, as long as your dog tolerates dairy and the yogurt does not contain unsafe sweeteners or added ingredients.¹ The key is moderation. Yogurt should never replace your dog’s complete and balanced meals.
At Tom&Sawyer, we know pet parents ask this because they want to share real food safely. That is a good instinct. But yogurt is one of those foods where the details matter.
Plain yogurt and flavored yogurt are not the same thing.
A spoonful and a bowl are not the same thing.
And a healthy dog and a dog with digestive disease are not the same either.
So before you scoop yogurt into your dog’s bowl, it helps to know what type to choose, how much to offer, and when to skip it completely.
Can Dogs Have Yogurt?
Can dogs have yogurt? Many dogs can have a small amount of plain yogurt, but not every dog should. Yogurt contains lactose, and Tufts notes that some dogs and cats do not tolerate lactose well.¹
That is the first thing to remember.
Even if yogurt is considered okay for some dogs, your dog’s stomach gets the final vote. If your dog develops gas, loose stool, vomiting, or discomfort after eating yogurt, it is not the right treat for them.
Start small. A tiny spoonful is enough to test tolerance. If your dog does well, yogurt can be used occasionally as a topper, a pill helper, or a small treat.
But it is still an extra.
Your dog’s regular meals should provide the nutrition they need every day. That's why we build every Tom&Sawyer recipe to deliver complete nutrition on its own, so a topper like yogurt is always optional, never a gap-filler.
Is Yogurt Good for Dogs?
Is yogurt good for dogs? It depends on what you mean by “good.” Plain yogurt can be a simple treat for dogs that tolerate dairy, but it is not a magic gut-health food and should not be treated like a cure for digestive problems.¹
This is where marketing can get confusing.
Many people think of yogurt as a probiotic food. But Tufts cautions that pet parents should be careful about assuming yogurt provides the same benefits as a veterinarian-recommended probiotic product.¹ If your dog has diarrhea, chronic gas, or a sensitive stomach, the answer is not always to add yogurt.
The better move is to ask why the digestive issue is happening.
A sudden food change, table scraps, stress, parasites, infection, food intolerance, or another medical issue could be involved. Yogurt may help some dogs enjoy a meal, but ongoing digestive symptoms need veterinary guidance.
What Kind of Yogurt Can Dogs Eat?
Dogs should only eat plain, unsweetened yogurt without unsafe sweeteners, chocolate, sugary mix-ins, or dessert-style ingredients. The label matters more than the front of the container.
Look for:
- Plain yogurt
- Unsweetened yogurt
- No xylitol
- No chocolate
- No candy pieces
- No sugary fruit syrup
- No artificial dessert flavors
Greek yogurt may be fine for some dogs if it is plain and unsweetened, but it can still contain lactose and may not suit every stomach.
Avoid yogurt cups made for people that include toppings, granola, cookie pieces, chocolate chips, sweet sauces, or sugar-free sweeteners. These are not designed for dogs.
The safest choice is boring.
Plain. Simple. No extras.
Can Dogs Eat Yogurt With Xylitol?
Dogs should never eat yogurt that contains xylitol. Xylitol is toxic to dogs and can cause a dangerous drop in blood sugar, and Merck notes that it can be found in many sugar-free products, foods, supplements, and even nonfood items.²
This is the most important label check.
Some products may also list xylitol as birch sugar or wood sugar. If you see any of those terms, do not feed it to your dog.
If your dog eats yogurt or any product containing xylitol, contact your veterinarian or an animal poison control resource immediately. Do not wait for symptoms to appear.
How Much Yogurt Can Dogs Eat?
Yogurt should stay within your dog’s treat allowance. Tufts recommends that treats should make up no more than 10% of a pet’s daily calories so the main diet stays balanced.³
That means the right amount depends on your dog’s size, calorie needs, and health status.
For a tiny dog, even a teaspoon may be enough. For a medium dog, a small spoonful may work. For a large dog, a slightly larger amount may still be reasonable, but only if it fits within their treat calories and does not upset their stomach.
Do not think of yogurt as a daily bowl.
Think of it as a small extra.
A little can go a long way, especially for dogs with sensitive stomachs or dogs who gain weight easily.
Can Puppies Eat Yogurt?
Puppies may be able to eat a tiny amount of plain yogurt, but it is not necessary. A puppy’s main nutrition should come from a complete and balanced puppy diet.
This is important because puppies are growing. Their food needs to support that growth properly, and too many extras can crowd out the nutrition they need from their regular meals.
If you want to offer yogurt to a puppy, keep it plain, keep it tiny, and ask your veterinarian first if the puppy is very young, underweight, sick, or having digestive issues.
Do not use yogurt to manage puppy diarrhea without veterinary guidance.
Puppies can become dehydrated quickly when they are vomiting or having diarrhea, so it is better to get help early.
Can Dogs Eat Yogurt Every Day?
Some dogs may tolerate a small amount of yogurt regularly, but daily yogurt is not needed for most dogs. If you feed it often, it still counts as a treat and should stay within the 10% treat limit.³
The question is not just, “Can my dog eat this?”
The better question is, “Does this fit my dog’s full diet?”
If yogurt adds extra calories, causes loose stool, or makes your dog ignore their regular food, it is not helping. If it is used occasionally and your dog tolerates it well, it can be a simple treat.
Consistency matters. If you feed yogurt often, watch your dog’s weight, appetite, and stool quality.
Is Yogurt Good for Dog Gut Health?
Yogurt may be associated with gut health in people, but dog gut health is not that simple. Tufts notes that yogurt contains lactose, some pets do not tolerate it well, and probiotic use should be approached carefully rather than assumed to be necessary for every pet.¹
So, is yogurt good for dog gut health?
Maybe for some dogs as a food they tolerate. Not as a guaranteed digestive solution.
If your dog has ongoing diarrhea, constipation, vomiting, gas, or appetite changes, yogurt should not be your main plan. Those signs deserve a closer look.
A better gut-health foundation is:
- Complete and balanced meals
- Consistent feeding times
- Gradual food transitions
- Limited table scraps
- Careful treat portions
- Veterinary guidance for ongoing symptoms
Yogurt can be one small optional piece, not the whole strategy.
When Should Dogs Not Eat Yogurt?
Some dogs should skip yogurt. Others should only have it if your veterinarian says it is appropriate.
Avoid yogurt if your dog:
- Gets diarrhea from dairy
- Vomits after eating dairy
- Has pancreatitis or fat intolerance
- Is on a strict therapeutic diet
- Has diabetes or another condition requiring treat control
- Is overweight and already getting too many extras
- Has chronic digestive symptoms
- Is allergic or sensitive to dairy ingredients
You should also avoid yogurt when the product contains unsafe ingredients. Merck lists several food hazards for dogs, including chocolate, xylitol, grapes and raisins, onions and garlic, macadamia nuts, alcohol, and raw yeast dough.4 Flavored yogurt products can sometimes include ingredients that are not appropriate for dogs, so labels matter.
How to Feed Yogurt to Dogs Safely
The safest way to feed yogurt to dogs is to keep it plain, keep it small, and introduce it slowly.
Try these simple ideas:
- Add a tiny spoonful to regular food
- Use a small amount as a pill helper
- Freeze a thin layer in a lick mat
- Mix a little with dog-safe fruit your dog already tolerates
- Use it as an occasional topper, not a daily habit
Do not add honey, chocolate, granola, sweet syrups, or dessert toppings. Do not use yogurt to hide unsafe foods or rich table scraps.
And if your dog refuses yogurt, that is fine.
They do not need it.
The Tom&Sawyer Approach to Real Food Extras
At Tom&Sawyer, we believe real food should be used with purpose. Yogurt can fit that philosophy for some dogs, but only when it supports the bigger feeding plan.
It is not magic.
It is not medicine.
It is not a replacement for complete and balanced meals.
If your dog enjoys plain yogurt and tolerates it well, it can be a small way to add variety. If your dog does not tolerate dairy, there is no reason to force it. Your dog can still enjoy real-food nutrition without yogurt. If you want help finding the right complete and balanced recipe for your dog, our personalized meal plan questionnaire can match them with a meal built for their needs.
The best bowl is the one that is balanced, consistent, and right for your dog.
