What Shih Tzu Meals Teach Us About Small Appetites, Texture, and Easy Feeding Routines

Figuring out what to feed your Shih Tzu can feel like a guessing game. That’s why we put together this Shih Tzu meal plan, a complete guide to understanding their unique dietary needs. We get into the specifics of what this breed actually requires, from nutrition and portion sizes to building a feeding routine that supports their health at every stage. Puppyhood to their senior years. It’s all about helping you choose the right food so your beloved companion thrives.

You set down the bowl, filled with what you were sure was the perfect meal. Your Shih Tzu gives it a sniff, a skeptical look, and then walks away. Not a single bite.

It’s a frustrating dance many owners know well.

But this isn't always just a case of having a “picky eater.” Their eating habits can be influenced by their small mouth, dental health, breathing comfort, and individual preferences. Shih Tzus are brachycephalic dogs, and veterinary resources note that brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome can include symptoms such as gagging when swallowing food or water in affected dogs.¹

At Tom&Sawyer, we know a successful meal plan has to be about more than just ingredients. It requires a deeper understanding of the animal. This guide provides a complete, actionable routine tailored to your Shih Tzu’s specific needs, explaining the what, why, and how of making mealtimes easier and more enjoyable.

So, where do we begin? Before we can build the perfect plan, we have to appreciate what makes this breed so special in the first place.

Understanding the Shih Tzu: Why a Specialized Meal Plan is Essential

A Shih Tzu’s delightful personality comes packaged with a unique set of needs. These traits often demand a thoughtful approach to nutrition.

It all starts with their most famous feature. That brachycephalic, or short-nosed, face.

This is the anatomy that creates their distinct facial structure. And while it’s a huge part of their charm, that specific build can make breathing, swallowing comfort, and mealtime texture more important considerations for some dogs.

The Building Blocks of the Best Diet for a Shih Tzu

That physical challenge with chewing makes the specific type of food you offer an important choice. A thoughtful diet, one built on the right nutritional blocks, supports their long-term health and, just as importantly, makes mealtime much less of a struggle.

It all starts with the ingredients.

We believe a foundation of high-quality animal protein is important for maintaining lean muscle and supporting daily health.

Your Shih Tzu's Daily Menu: Portion Sizes and Feeding Schedule

So if quality protein is the foundation, the next logical question is simple. How much should you actually be feeding your Shih Tzu?

The answer isn’t a single number. It depends on their age, weight, body condition, and activity level. Many adult Shih Tzus need relatively modest daily calories, but the exact number depends on the dog and the food’s calorie density.

This breed may not do well with one large meal.

Their small bodies and limited stomach capacity often make smaller meals easier to manage. That’s why at Tom&Sawyer, we recommend splitting their daily food into two or even three smaller meals. This simple practice can help maintain a consistent routine. Small-stature puppies can also be vulnerable to hypoglycemia, especially when they are very young, ill, stressed, or not eating well.² A consistent schedule also supports digestion and makes house-training routines smoother.

A Sample Daily Schedule

So, what does this look like in practice? Let’s map out a sample menu using a typical 12-pound adult Shih Tzu as our guide. It is so important to remember that these are just guidelines. You will always need to adjust amounts based on your dog’s unique metabolism and activity level, and it’s a great conversation to have with your veterinarian.

Morning Meal (8 AM):

• Serve a measured portion of Tom&Sawyer fresh food based on your dog’s calorie needs.
• Or, if you’re using high-quality kibble, use the package calorie guide and measure carefully.

Evening Meal (6 PM):

• Serve the second measured portion of Tom&Sawyer fresh food.
• Or serve the remaining measured amount of high-quality kibble to finish the day.

You’ve probably seen different portion sizes and wondered why they don't match. It’s all about calorie density and moisture. Fresh, gently-cooked food is packed with natural moisture, while dry kibble is more concentrated by weight. This means a serving of one looks nothing like a serving of the other, which is an important distinction for any owner to grasp.

Kibble vs. Wet Food vs. Fresh Food: What's Best for a Shih Tzu?

A complete and balanced diet is the cornerstone of your dog's health. We know that. But we also know just how hard it is to resist those puppy-dog eyes staring up from beneath the dinner table.

Dry kibble is the most common choice. Its convenience and long shelf life are undeniable benefits. That said, some Shih Tzus may struggle with very hard textures, especially if they have dental disease or small mouths. Wet food offers stronger aroma and softer texture, but quality varies by brand and leftovers require safe storage.

Fresh, gently-cooked food like ours, Tom&Sawyer's human-grade meals, provides a moisture-rich, soft-textured option. Made with 98% whole-food ingredients and prepared in regulated human-food facilities, these meals focus on clear ingredients and complete nutrition. For Shih Tzus prone to selective eating or digestive sensitivity, our chef-crafted recipes deliver real meat proteins and vegetables in a format many small dogs find easier to enjoy.

The Do's and Don'ts: Safe Treats and Toxic Foods for Your Shih Tzu

A complete and balanced diet is the cornerstone of your dog's health. We know that. But we also know just how hard it is to resist those puppy-dog eyes staring up from beneath the dinner table. The good news? Some human foods are perfectly fine as occasional additions.

The key is moderation.

Safe & Healthy Treats (In Moderation)

So what can you safely share? A few bites of cooked lean meat, like plain chicken or turkey, can be a nice small treat, and some steamed carrots or green beans work well, too. You can also mix in small amounts of blueberries or a spoonful of plain pumpkin puree. And about that classic breakfast question: yes, your Shih Tzu can have scrambled eggs. Just make certain they are served plain and are thoroughly cooked. Think of it as a small treat. Not a full meal.

Foods to Never Feed Your Shih Tzu

The line between a safe snack and a dangerous one is sharp. Most pet parents already know to steer clear of fatty, salty, and processed foods, but some ingredients are outright toxic. Your dog’s safety really depends on you keeping these specific items far away.

Never let your Shih Tzu eat:

• Chocolate
• Grapes or raisins
• Onions and garlic, no matter the form
• Macadamia nuts
• Anything containing the sweetener xylitol

These are recognized food hazards for dogs and should be kept securely out of reach.³

Troubleshooting Common Shih Tzu Feeding Problems

It’s a frustrating feeling. You prepare what you think is a perfect, loving meal, only for it to be met with a suspicious sniff and a turned-up nose.

Sound familiar? When you're faced with a picky eater, we've found the most powerful tool is a consistent routine. It all starts with creating a predictable schedule. You offer your Shih Tzu's food for a specific, short window of time, such as 15 to 20 minutes. If they turn their nose up and walk away, the bowl disappears until the next scheduled mealtime. However, do not use this strategy if your dog is a puppy, underweight, diabetic, ill, or showing sudden appetite loss without checking with your veterinarian first.

Key Takeaways: Your Shih Tzu Meal Plan at a Glance

Building the right plan means respecting your Shih Tzu’s specific needs. It’s less complicated than it sounds. You just have to be consistent.

Knowing what to steer clear of is a big piece of the puzzle for a healthy feeding routine. But that knowledge is only helpful if your dog is actually eating. What do you do when the problem is completely reversed, and your discerning dog refuses even the highest-quality, safest foods you offer?

Here’s your plan at a glance:

• Acknowledge Their Build: A Shih Tzu's short snout, small mouth, and possible dental concerns can make soft-textured food easier for some dogs to pick up and chew.
• Prioritize Quality Protein: Choose named animal proteins as key ingredients, such as real chicken, beef, or turkey, not vague ingredient language.
• Split Their Meals: Divide daily portions into 2-3 smaller meals to support a consistent routine and reduce the burden of one large meal.
• Stay Consistent: Establish firm feeding times and stick to them. If food isn't eaten within 20 minutes, remove it until the next scheduled meal, unless your dog has a medical reason not to skip meals.
• Choose Clear Ingredients: Gently-cooked, human-grade food like Tom&Sawyer's gives you a soft, moisture-rich option with recognizable ingredients.
